Carlos ‘Carlinhos’ Vinicios Santos de Jesus

17 years, Bayer 04 Leverkusen

One year ago Carlinhos seemed destined for fame after signing a contract with Bayer 04 Leverkusen on his 18th birthday. But the young Brazilian was not prepared for the social change and cultural challenges he would face when living in Germany. Earning glory in only one Euro League match against Norway’s Trondheim, he found himself dropped within months to the last club in Germany’s second division, Jahn Regensburg. Homesick and mourning over two of his best friends being killed in the streets back home in São Paulo, Carlinhos escapes back to Brazil, declining offers from Germany’s FC Cologne and missing other opportunities. Following battles with his agents and months of frustration, he is about to make his way back to the professional world of football.
